As more and more web-accessible applications are being developed and subsequently packaged in Debian, it is becoming increasingly important to provide a common infrastructure for how these applications should behave.
webapps-common fills this niche by providing a centralized set of tools and procedures for configuring web applications, webserver extensions, and other packages related to the world of web applications.
With this in mind, webapps-common has been designed to:
support the entire family of apache based webservers
support "subdirectory" and "virtualhost" style configurations for web servers
support multiple "instances" of an installed application, so that one installed package can be used for any number of installed sites.
generate template-based web server configuration files automatically, customizable by both the packager and the local admin.
generate template-based web application configuration files.
integrated support for database applications
prompt users with a set of normalized, pre-translated questions
work for package maintainers with little effort on their part
do all the hard work automatically
work for local admins with little effort on their part
comply with an agreed upon set of standards for behaviour
do absolutely nothing if it is the whim of the local admin
perform all operations from within the standard flow of debian package maintenance (no additional skill is required of the local admin)
